Environmental Noise Impact Assessment

Environmental noise approval support

Before any new resource project can proceed it is necessary to assess the environmental impacts and clearly demonstrate to stakeholders that emissions can be adequately controlled.

Noise can be a particularly sensitive issue when facilities are located close to communities, and is no longer accepted as a by-product of development.

Noise issues can be expensive to resolve retrospectively and need to be addressed as early as possible while there is the most flexibility for modification of designs.

1 Typical problem areas
  • Obtaining environmental approvals for new oil & gas installations both onshore and offshore
  • Obtaining environmental approvals for new mining or mineral processing plants and infrastructure
  • EPCM design teams not familiar with relevant noise impact legislation
  • Project managers not familiar with ramifications of design decisions on noise emissions
  • Need to quantify community noise impacts
  • Need to optimize design to minimize noise impacts
  • Changes to transportation infrastructure (eg, road, rail, aircraft and conveyor)
2 Environmental noise assessment support

An environmental assessment is supported by comprehensive, high-quality measurement services, including:

  • Ambient noise assessment
  • Continuous noise monitoring
  • Traffic noise monitoring
  • Blast noise monitoring
  • Assessment of noise characteristics including tonality, modulation and impulsiveness
  • Narrow band noise measurements
  • Source identification
  • Sound power evaluation
3 Our expertise

Wood’s noise experts (formerly SVT Engineering Consultants) are very familiar with the assessment process and have a sound understanding of regulators’ policies and objectives to ensure that all relevant aspects are addressed.

Our industrial experience and familiarity with typical noise emissions of equipment enable us to quickly provide feedback on the likelihood of future issues. Being involved early in your design process, we can help mitigate noise issues via design improvements and equipment specifications.

Key in our expertise is noise modelling and prediction, both airborne impact for humans and underwater for marine life. Our methodology includes detailed noise contouring, identification of key noise emitters, evaluation and specification of noise mitigation options and management plans.

Our noise.AI technology can classify sound emissions in real-time and as accurately as human experts to automate noise assessments and help you optimise performance at noise‑constrained facilities, worksites or infrastructure.
